Back Cover Text
“After all, when the pretense is gone and the microscope applied, we are all just ordinary people trying to live out Christianity every day.”
As a young man, Kent “Grumpy” Smith had always been successful. However, when his golf store business failed, he experienced a series of events that ultimately led him into a deep depression. In the fall of 2004, Kent had just begun his recovery from depression and felt the need to share his experiences with others who might be affected by the disease. The result was Everyday Christianity, a book based on a 14-week Bible class that Kent taught at his church in Plano, Texas.
Everyday Christianity is not just a book about recovery; it also covers topics such as emotion in worship, service, loneliness, integrity, control, failure, trust in the Lord, and true peace. The lessons provided in this book are the open-heart feelings of a man who is trying to grow in the love of the Lord and service to others. His honesty is apparent on each page as he reveals his weaknesses, failures, and triumphs in a way that will have you wanting to apply what you are reading to your life.
Grumpy describes himself as “just an ordinary man.” He doesn’t have a Ph.D, and he hasn’t served as a minister for 30 years. He is a wonderful storyteller who captivates his listeners with his experiences that have taught him a few things about living for God and others. Grumpy and his wife, Paula, live in Frisco, Texas, where he is a real-estate agent and professional speaker. The couple has two married children and three grandchildren.

Accolades for Everyday Christianity
Life is good. Each of us can easily assess how we have been blessed by God in numerous ways, and thus, we can boldly exclaim, “Life is really good!” But life is also hard. Wouldn’t you agree? The days of any life are frequently filled with pain, discomfort, failure, temptation, and sin.
How are we to live in the midst of all of this? Perhaps, Kent Smith has developed a single set of reminders to come to the aid of each of us. His work in this book is motivational, devotional, inspirational, and instructional. With straightforward, real life examples tied to scriptures, Kent reminds us how to live with more joy—even when life is difficult.

President, Lubbock Christian University
In “Everyday Christianity,” my friend, Kent Smith, shares his story. I expect that most readers will, as I did, identify with many of his joys, frustrations, failures, and victories. Each vignette is laced with emotion, spiritual insight, Biblical application, and a smattering of humor. Kent describes himself as an “ordinary man,” without degrees or position. One should not assume from this that Kent has nothing to offer to those who seek a deeper walk with the Lord and a stronger commitment to Biblical values. As I read Kent’s manuscript at 30,000 feet on a cross country flight, I was challenged, instructed, touched, and moved and at times would find myself laughing aloud, much to the amusement of some of my fellow passengers. I encourage you to read and learn from Kent Smith’s story. You may find that, in many respects, it is also your story. You may also find answers for some of your struggles or at least the courage to continue the journey.

Kent “Grumpy” Smith (even the name of the author hints at self deprecating humor) deftly
weaves humor into the fabric of wisdom from the bible and applies it to everyday life in this fine
book. It is filled with personal anecdotes that capture your imagination. I felt like a priest at a
juicy confession, even though I don’t belong to an organized religious denomination… I’m
Methodist.
