Yesterday was the fourth year in a row that Steve Brock and his fellow dad’s have spent the day on the pool party deck at the Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas. I have been a part of every one of those days, and I am so thankful for that. I may be a little off on the facts, but as I understand it this is Steve’s way of celebrating his birthday. He celebrates with his kids and a group of other dad’s and their kids at the Ballpark.
Yesterday there were nine dads and I think seventeen kids. You should try counting a bunch of kids in a swimming pool; it’s right next to impossible. I think the only way to get it done accurately would be to take picture and count heads, and even then there might be one of them under water that you don’t see. Anyway, these guys have a great time of fun and fellowship with their kids and friends. This day is so special to this group of guys that Steve’s brother, who lives in Round Rock, makes the trip with his children every year.
There is always one man there who doesn’t have any kids of his own. His name is Brian. Brian is just a good friend of Steve’s and he loves the kids like they were his own. He also makes sure Steve leaves the ballpark with a gift that has been signed by everyone present. I even get to sign the gift, and have been included in some of the group photos that have been taken. I have signed a baseball, (that is not easy to do folks) a game jersey, a cap, and yesterday a broken bat that was used by Steve Murphy in last year’s game. Steve Murphy is now playing in Oklahoma City, with the Texas Ranger’s triple AAA team.
I think the thing that makes this day so special for me is that I get to see the very positive interaction of everyone involved. Every dad treats each young one as if he or she were his own. It is also refreshing to see a group of well-mannered kids, who say thank you, and yes sir. I had one nine or ten-year old girl come to me twice to tell me how good a cook I am. Another aspect I see is the love each man has for his family and friends. These are guys who really enjoy their kids. They genuinely enjoy being with them and being a part of their lives. The young know they are loved, and cared for.
I don’t want to leave a false impression because I have not mentioned any wives. These men are married and have happy relationships at home. However, this day is a dad’s day with his kids.
I want to finish by saying, thanks Steve, and all the rest of you men, for allowing me to be a part of your special day each year. I hope your example will shine out to others, and encourage them to be a larger part of their children’s lives.
One final note on yesterday’s experience at the Ballpark, I wish I knew the young ladies name that sang the National Anthem. She was amazing. As I was putting my hat back on after the song was over I told JP, the usher standing next to me, “That may be the best National Anthem I have heard sang here in the last four years.” He said, “I agree.” I watched the young lady walk up the steps and meet up with a group of family and friends, and I told JP, “I’ll be back in a minute, I have to go tell her what a great job she did.” I am so glad I took the time and effort to do that. She and her family lite up like the fourth of July when I told her how beautifully she had done. Just seeing her eyes, and smile gave me a memory I will always remember.
Till next time,
Grump
